Integration Yoga Workshop

the science of the nadis, bandhas and chakras
18:00-20:30
@ Sun & Moon Yoga Studio

Yoga for many begins with the practice of asana, synchronizing the movements of the body with the flow of the breath. The definition of Yoga, according to Patanjali, is the cessation of the waves of the mind. So in order to bridge the one with the other, it is vital to integrate the dynamics of our subtle anatomy: the nadis (channels), bandhas (locks) and chakras (energy centers).

Hatha Yoga is the merging of opposites, the union of the male and female energies within us. This unification happens in the subtle anatomy, which is supported by our physical structure and activity. If one practices any of the Hatha Yogas (Ashtanga, Iyengar, Anusara, Bikram, etc.), the opportunity to deepen one’s practice is to cultivate the subtle energies within. We open and clear the channels, utilize the bandhas to guide and direct energy to flow freely up and through the various chakras, ultimately resulting in the stilling of the waves of the mind.

In this workshop, we will explore exercises to gain awareness of our subtle anatomy. We will do pranayama to strengthen the bandhas as well as learn a powerful mantra to clear and energize the chakras. Finally, we will do a yoga set designed to integrate subtle awareness with a physical asana practice. The practice of yoga opens many doors. And if it’s time to go deeper, the tools to help you do the work are right there inside of us.

Yoga & Numerology Workshop

Saturday April 9, 2011

YOGA & NUMEROLOGY:

Science of Yoga meets Science of Numbers

17:00-20:00
@ Sun & Moon Yoga Studio, Meguro

In this workshop, we will tap into the insightful use of numerology (using our date of birth) as a way to determine where we have challenges and weaknesses as well as gifts and strengths in our lives. With this knowledge, we can see a clear and useful picture of ourselves and know very practically how we can grow. We can then use specific yoga exercises to become well-rounded, balanced, harmonious in relationships, connected to our spiritual self, and feeling satisfied and fulfilled on our life’s path.

We will spend time going over the formula which gives each person their numerology chart, including the 3 areas of challenge and the 2 areas of strength. This relates to 10 bodies we have: our physical body, the 4 subtle inner bodies and the 5 outer ‘light’ bodies. When we have this view of ourselves, we can approach our obstacles with clarity and confidence and utilize our gifts to their utmost potential.

We will then practice a yoga set to energize and strengthen these 10 bodies, as well as work with a powerful mantra to help us master all parts of ourselves. This knowledge can be taken with you so you can have fun doing numerology charts for your friends and family, which will also shed light on yourself and your practice. If you would like to go more in depth and are interested in a personal reading, you can receive one via email for an additional fee.

MODERN YOGA MOVEMENT:

bringing new dimension to your yoga practice
14:00-16:00
Under The Light Yoga School, Yoyogi

Some people approach yoga as a well-balanced and holistic way to exercise, be healthy, and find peace of mind. Others may relate to it as a spiritual path, a lifestyle that brings us to the goal of experiencing our naturally enlightened state. Regardless of the reason or the belief, working with the body, the breath and the energy that animates all life gives great benefit to each of us and the way we function in the world. The more expanded the facilities of our bodies and mind, the greater the results in our health, wealth, creativity, relationships and well-being.

The contemporary form of yoga which we find in most studios today borrows from a variety of traditions including Indian wrestling and British gymnastics. And its continued evolution has accelerated tremendously as we understand the human body through other systems like massage/body work, physical therapy, high-performance training, martial arts and dance. Some very important modern influence come from people who through rehabilitating injuries have designed systems that take movement methodology one step further (like Pilates and GYROKINESIS). And much like the master teachers who have developed the yoga systems of today, we can evolve our practice and make it more personal by integrating this valuable knowledge and experience we are constantly discovering about the human body.

In this workshop we will explore some of the techniques as they have been developed in the GYROKINESIS system as taught by creator Juliu Horvath. We will learn three key elements to dynamic movement, practice asana for healthy joints and spine, as well as learn how to integrate these modern techniques in our yoga practice. This approach can greatly expand the scope of our practice, help us find our greatest movement potential, and breathe creativity and new life into all areas of our lives. It is a perfect workshop for beginning yoga students and can open new doors for those with well developed movement capacities and experience.

The Tao Of Yoga Workshop @ UTL

Saturday October 9

THE TAO OF YOGA

the internal practice of yoga and stilling the mind
14:00-16:00
@ Under The Light Yoga School, Yoyogi

Life is an undivided river.  Yet we experience the various currents pulling us this way and that, which can make us feel disconnected from ourselves and our environment.  We see ourselves and life as separate, and become stuck in habitual patterns trying to ease our pain and suffering.  Spiritual work can help us to get unstuck, to unify our inner and outer worlds and guide us along the river of life.  And when we bring this work into our everyday lives, the whole of existence becomes our temple and simple daily activity becomes our sacred work.

Spiritual work comes in many forms.  Some are attracted to the physical experience of yoga asana, where others are drawn to the subtle practices of meditation.  In this workshop we will discover the path of “both/and” where we find the benefits of cultivating stillness in the mind through physical movement.  Like the river that flows around the rock, this “both/and” way is a support to experiencing “effortless action” in life, building strength and determination yet at the same time leading into deeper states of surrender.  Eventually, with these two elements together, we understand that we don’t practice yoga, we live it.  Life flows spontaneously and naturally.

In this workshop we will work with asanas that are designed to expand our body’s capacity to store energy (chi/prana), bringing the quality of space and emptiness to our actions.  We will do healing breaths to restore vital energy for health and longevity in our body and mind.  And we will practice meditations to experience more subtle states of “Being” and to expand awareness.  These tools can be integrated with any spiritual practice one may already have, and is perfect for beginners as well as for those wanting to bring a beginner’s mind to their practice.

Detox Yoga Workshop @ Sun & Moon

I have the best intention to document my activities. I even remember to pack my camera as I head out to Meguro. Then, as I proceed through the 3-hour class full of bright and shiny students, I completely forget to take even one solitary photo.  So here’s a photo of Fuji-san on the day of the full moon amidst the glorious setting sun; a true balance of sun and moon.

Oh well, more important than snapping photos was being at the one and only Sun & Moon Studio!  As Leza reminded me, during my first visit here in Tokyo we had met and talked about doing a yoga program there.  And here it is, many years later that this vision has finally become a reality.

Since this was a 3-hour workshop, I was able to share my full Kundalini Detox Yoga set, some Dream & Sleep Yoga practices as well as Yogi Bhajan’s style of Ishnaan (cold morning showers).  We also went over the benefits of dry brushing, supportive healthy eating habits, and the fundamentals of fasting.  And as a further way to support interested detox students, I’m beginning the cycle of Kundalini Yoga for my morning class plus I’ll be offering another 10-day version of the mung beans and rice diet.

The detox program was fun and full of energy, and a great platform for providing more workshops and intensives at Sun & Moon in the future.

Mini-Detox Weekend, Izu-Nagaoka

One of the more popular of our Rudra Yoga programs is the 5-Day Yoga Detox Intensive.  It’s a unique schedule of around-the-clock yoga, healing/creative work, hydrotherapy, cleansing diet, and study of the teachings.  To prepare for this intensive endeavor which will occur next Spring, we did a mini version at a ryokan in Izu-Nagaoka with my team of guinea pig yogis (enjoying healing time at the foot bath on top of Mt. Katsuragi).

This yoga intensive is unique because it focuses on cleaning and clearing the physical, emotional and mental material that we no longer need or unnecessarily hang on to in our lives.  We did this through a liquid diet of orange/apple/papaya juice (nourishing) and onion/garlic juice (detoxifying), hydrotherapy in hot and cold baths, healing with Reiki, plus a whole lotta Kundalini Yoga.  It was a great way to close the Summer months and enter into the beginnings of Fall with clear body, energy and mind.

Though the weekend version is much lighter, everyone felt the wonderfully enlightening effects of detoxing.  It was nice to have a weekend outside of Tokyo, and it was a fun and memorable way to be together with friends.  When the next 5-day Yoga Detox Program comes around, it’s something I recommend trying at least once.  You’ll never forget it!

Morning Yoga at Sun & Moon, Meguro

Practicing yoga first thing in the morning creates a foundation for discovering our highest potential,  develops the discipline of self-correction, and integrates body, mind and spirit.  Through consistent and steady focus, we build experiences of spiritual truths and develop our awareness of higher consciousness.  As this connection is strengthened, we become intentional in our thoughts, words and actions.  Truth becomes reality.

We present this morning program as a way to integrate practice with the activities of daily life, benefiting both ourselves and others.  It is a vital element in the improvement of health, creativity, relationships, and state of mind.  So join us in the practice of pranayama, asana, mantra and meditation, providing for ourselves the opportunity to learn and grow, opening deeply to the wealth of experiences in life.

Observer is the best way to have a steel mindset and achieve your goals of being a yoga coach. They will definitely give you the best results in an optimal time. Surely what you are looking for is the body of a supermodel, because you already have it with Observer. The best sports instructors with the best implements at your fingertips.

Hatha Yoga is the merging of opposites, the union of the male and female energies within us. This unification happens in the subtle anatomy, which is supported by our physical structure and activity. 10-day Mung Beans & Rice Diet

As a continuation of the Yoga Detox Program, a group of us did a 10-day version of the Mung Beans & Rice diet.  This dish is an easy to make Indian style kicherie which reduces the normal stress we put on the digestive system, giving it a chance to heal and repair itself.  The dish itself is delicious and nutritious which makes it an easy beginners diet/cleanse.  Normally it is done for 30 to 40 days, but I adjusted it so it could suit our first time cleansers.  The diet was supplemented with whole fruit in-between meals and all you can drink Yogi Tea (made from scratch).  Probably the most obvious change was the weight we lost, but in time this diet can help one feel the shedding of unwanted and unneeded emotional and mental material as well.  And because many of you have requested the recipe, you can find it here.  Plus I recommend reading Yogi Bhajan’s thoughts about fasting.

Detox Yoga Workshop

spring cleaning for the mind, body and soul
14:00-16:00
@ Under The Light Yoga School, Yoyogi

When we begin our journey with yoga, it’s like preparing the soil for a garden to produce an abundance of fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices. As we deepen our practice, we plant the seeds that we choose to cultivate. And if we want the best possible result with our garden, we create the best possible environment to nurture these seedlings. So similarly in our yoga practice, it is an important step to cleanse the body and mind to properly cultivate the ‘seed’ or light of our true nature which yoga reveals.

Spring is the perfect time of year to cleanse. It is when new growth appears in nature. It is when new blood is produced in the body and naturally we shed old, unused material. And by doing specific dietary cleanses in combination with asana, healing breaths and meditation, we create the optimal environment for our work with yoga to bear fruit.

In this workshop, we will introduce yoga asana designed specifically to heal the digestive system which, if not working properly, is the cause of many illnesses and diseases. We will also learn to use the breath and meditation to heal the major organs and release burdensome thoughts and negative emotions. Finally, we will look at a few suggested yogic cleanses which will aid in our body’s natural desire and ability to repair and heal itself. If we simply lighten the load we place on our bodies and minds, our yoga practice will bear the fruit that will nourish us deep within and eternally without.
