What is Kundalini Yoga?

Managing Emotions With Yoga

When we get emotional, having self-control and maintaining our awareness can seem difficult if not impossible. But in actuality emotional states are very easy to identify and understand. An essential tool in managing our emotions with yoga is learning about the Five Poisons, the basic categories of negative emotions. Then we can actually change the way we feel by utilizing yoga asana and pranayama remedies to bring about the positive counterparts. Finally we can experience the lightness and clarity that follows which opens the door to our natural state of being – the state of yoga.

When we allow ourselves to be in a truly natural state, without effort we experience love, compassion, equanimity and joy. We deeply connect to our soul, rejoice in the happiness of others, feel inner and outer balance, and our spirit is uplifted and inspired. When we come up against obstacles and challenges, it can stimulate the patterns of our poisonous emotions. We can feel animosity towards others, become attached to things for our happiness, get stuck in habits that don’t help us to grow, or become indifferent or lazy about our growth and purpose in life.

In this workshop we will learn about the five poisonous emotions, how to use yoga asana and pranayama to remedy the negative experience, and cultivate the naturally positive qualities in our being. We will also learn a mantra that purifies negative thoughts and emotions and allows us to be in a clear and balanced state. No matter where we are now in our practice, we can all learn how to stop when we get emotional, check in with ourselves, and work as skillfully as possible to get the results we desire. Liberate your emotions and live a life full of joy and inspiration!

感情を管理するためのヨガ

人は感情的になると、自己をコントロールしたり、気づきを保ったりすることを、不可能ではないにせよ難しく感じるものです。しかし現実には、心の状態というものは認識し理解することが非常に容易でもあります。
ヨガを感情の管理に用いるために必要なのは、「五つの毒」と呼ばれる否定的な感情の基本的なカテゴリーについて学ぶことです。これを知ることで、私たちはヨガのアーサナとプラナヤマを用い、相対するポジティブな要素を引き出し、物事の感じ方を変えてゆくことができるのです。そして最終的には、陽気で明瞭な気分を味わうことができるようになり、これこそ私たちが自然な状態 – ヨガの境地 – へ到達するための扉を開いてくれるものなのです。

真に自然な状態に身を置くことができるなら、私たちは労することなく、愛や思いやり、落ち着きや喜びを経験することができるでしょう。自らの魂と深く結びつき、他者の幸福を喜び、内と外に調和を見出し、精神は高められ、インスピレーションを得ることができるのです。障害や課題に直面すると、私たちの有害な感情パターンは刺激を受けます。他者を憎んだり、私たちの幸福に必要であると思われるような物事に執着するようになったり、自分の成長の妨げとなるような習慣から抜け出せなくなったり、成長することや人生の目的に無関心で、怠惰になってしまうのです。

このワークショップでは、五つの有害な感情について学び、ヨガのアーサナとプラナヤマをネガティブな経験の改善にどう用いるか、私たちという存在の内にありのままのポジティブな要素をどのように育むかを見てゆきます。また、否定的な考えや感情を浄化し、明瞭で調和の取れた状態へと私たちを導くためのマントラを学びます。
みなさんのプラクティスが今どのような段階にあろうとも、私たちはみな、感情的になってしまった時にどうやって立ち止まり自分の状態を確認するか、できるだけ上手に望む結果を得るためにはどのように取り組めば良いのかを学ぶことができるのです。

Every time you eat, you create your future self. Our food provides the building blocks for our health, literally becoming the assemblage of components which make up the entire body from the brain to our bones. In time each cell of the body is rebuilt by the nutrients in what we eat and helps determine our body’s overall health and vitality, mood and demeanor, as well as mental attitude and experience of life.
「食べるものがその人をつくる」。 これは本当です。私たちは食べるという行為を通して、未来の自分自身をつくっているのです。健康であるために必要な要素は食べ物から与えられ、それは文字通り脳から骨に至るまで、私たちの身体を構成する要素の集合体となるのです。やがて、体内の細胞の一つ一つは私たちが食べたものの栄養素によって生まれ変わり、これによって私たちの身体全体の健康と生命力、気分や物腰、そして精神的態度や人生経験までが決まるとも言えるのです。

Learning how to eat for our health is not often taught by our parents nor by our educational systems, and the old cultural and indigenous traditions that make sacred this knowledge have been sidelined by the convenience of technology and industry. Most information made readily available are from advertisements and media, government agencies and institutions, as well as large corporations. Food becomes fuel for the body, pleasure for our taste buds, and comfort for our emotions.
健康な食べ方については、家庭や学校でもあまり学べるものではありませんし、古くからの文化と、固有の伝統に根ざした食に関する尊い知恵は、技術と産業がもたらした利便性の影に追いやられてしまっています。たやすく得られる情報の大半は、広告かマスコミ、政府や行政機関、または大企業からのものから成り立っています。食べ物は身体の燃料となり、私たちの味覚に喜びを与え、感情に安らぎを与えてくれるのです。

As we enter the time of holidays, family gatherings, and extra emotional stress, we will most likely be relating to a lot of food. To support the beginning of the new year and resolutions for better health, we present this workshop of Food for Health and Healing. We will explore methods old and new for using specific foods for cleaning out toxins and waste, maintaining energy, cellular health and optimal weight, and discovering the benefits of nutrient rich food. We will look at:

On Saturday, November 19th, I will be sharing the healing tradition in which I’ve been working for the past 15 years – the practice of Reiki. If you are interested, it will be a great opportunity to become initiated as a level I practitioner and to understand how it can be used for your all-around creativity, prosperity, health and well being.

‘Rei’ means divine and ‘Ki’ means life force. This form of healing energy is inherent in and exists all around us. It is suitable for anyone. There are no special requirements or talent; just the desire for opening more deeply to one’s healing abilities.

Join us for this workshop which will include basic theories, procedures and attunements to becoming a level I practitioner. You will learn hand placement positions for treating yourself and others with Reiki, as well as a variety of ways to apply it to daily living and creative work. The workshop will have a 1-hour lunch break.

Miles Maeda has been a practitioner of Reiki for over 15 years, becoming a master teacher in 1998 through his teacher Margie Brittain. Fusing this healing work with his yoga/meditation practice, his musical creations, business pursuits, and personal relationships, Miles has a very grounded and practical way of sharing the application of Reiki. He offers educational programs like these around the globe to support those also interested in melding spiritual work with worldly activity.

Thank you to Tomoko and Norika for organizing this workshop and for a wonderful time in Ibaraki.  The studio is so lovely, with wood furniture and decor all the way from Bali.  Some of the students didn’t make the photo, but we had about 19 people total in the workshop.  I look forward to being back!

Liver & Gallbladder Cleanse

Liver & Gallbladder Cleanse

Cleanses and flushes toxins from the liver and eliminates gallstones and biliary sludge from within the gallbladder.  As with all cleanses, it is best to do under the supervision of a qualified health practitioner.

 

Ingredients:

1. about 1.3 liters Apple Cider Vinegar - acts as a solvent in the bile to weaken adhesions between solid globules.  The apple cider vinegar should be unprocessed and organic.

2. 60 ml (4 Tbsp.) Epsom Salt (magnesium sulfate) – allows magnesium to be absorbed into the blood stream, relaxing smooth muscles and allowing stones to pass without spasms.

3. 100 ml (1/2 C.) Extra Virgin Cold-Pressed Olive Oil - stimulates the gallbladder and bile duct to contract, thus expelling stones and any other solid waste stored in the liver and gallbladder.

4. 1 large OR 2 small Grapefruit (pink grapefruit emulsifies with the oil better, but regular grapefruit is fine) – speeds the transit of the olive oil through the stomach and into the duodenum which helps to prevent or minimize nausea.

 

The Procedure (4 days + 1 morning):

IMPORTANT: it is recommended to do this cleanse during a time where on the 4th day (evening) and 5th day (morning) you have nothing important to do but to focus on the Epsom salt flush.

For 3 days - drink the mixture of apple cider vinegar in water 8x/day.  Mix 45 ml (3 Tbsp.) apple cider vinegar and 200 ml (1 C.) filtered or purified water.  Drink 1 glass every 2 hours.  You will consume around 2 l. (1/2 gallon) total of the mixture per day for the 3 days.  During this time, eliminate meat and animal products (dairy), fried foods, processed and packaged foods, sugar, alcohol and stimulants, and anything that taxes the liver.  A vegan and alkaline diet is ideal.

On the 4th day - you will begin the Epsom salt flush.  So it is important not eat after 14:00 in the afternoon (you can continue to do apple cider vinegar drinks up until 14:00).  Prepare 60 ml (4 tablespoons) of Epsom salt with 600 ml (3 C.) of filtered or purified water (= 4 servings). Store in a jar and place in refrigerator (for convenience and taste only).  Then:

18:00 - Drink 1st serving (150 ml (3/4 C.)) of the cold Epsom salts. You may drink water afterwards if needed.

20:00 - Drink 2nd serving (150 ml (3/4 C.)) of the Epsom salt mix. You will have not eaten since 14:00 in the afternoon, but you should not feel hungry.  Get your olive oil and grapefruit drink ready (you can do this later as well, around 21:45).  Pour the 100 ml (1/2 C.) of olive oil into a jar (with cover). Squeeze the grapefruit (no pulp) into a measuring cup.  You should have at least 100 ml (1/2 C.) juice but 150 ml (3/4 C.) is better.  Add the grapefruit juice into the jar of olive oil.  Cover the jar and shake vigorously, store in the refrigerator.

22:00 - Shake again and drink the olive oil/grapefruit juice mixture while standing up.  You can use a straw.  Try to consume it within a 5 minute period.  Then:

Lie Down Immediately - This is important to get the stones out.  Make sure that you have all your chores done before.  Lie on your right side with your right knee drawn up toward your chest for about 20 minutes – or you can lie flat on your back with your head elevated on a couple of pillows.  Go to sleep!  You may fail to get stones if you do not relax and sleep.

Next Morning - Upon waking, take your 3rd serving (150 ml (3/4 C.)) of Epsom salt mix (you can expect to flush in the morning).  Do not take it before 6:00.  If you feel nauseous or have indigestion when you get up, take 15 ml (1 Tbsp.) of apple cider vinegar in a little water and wait for it to pass before taking the third Epsom salt mix.

2 Hours Later - Take your 4th (last) dose of the Epsom salt mix.  You may go back to bed.

Throughout that day, you should fast with pure liquids.  If you must eat, have only fruit, raw salad, and/or brothy soup.

 

NOTE: It is recommended that you maintain more of a simple diet (greens, salads, veggies, fruit, lots of fluids (fresh vegetable & fruit juices) with very little cooked food) for about 3-4 days.

Yoga for many begins with the practice of asana, synchronizing the movements of the body with the flow of the breath. The definition of Yoga, according to Patanjali, is the cessation of the waves of the mind. So in order to bridge the one with the other, it is vital to integrate the dynamics of our subtle anatomy: the nadis (channels), bandhas (locks) and chakras (energy centers).

Hatha Yoga is the merging of opposites, the union of the male and female energies within us. This unification happens in the subtle anatomy, which is supported by our physical structure and activity. If one practices any of the Hatha Yogas (Ashtanga, Iyengar, Anusara, Bikram, etc.), the opportunity to deepen one’s practice is to cultivate the subtle energies within. We open and clear the channels, utilize the bandhas to guide and direct energy to flow freely up and through the various chakras, ultimately resulting in the stilling of the waves of the mind.

In this workshop, we will explore exercises to gain awareness of our subtle anatomy. We will do pranayama to strengthen the bandhas as well as learn a powerful mantra to clear and energize the chakras. Finally, we will do a yoga set designed to integrate subtle awareness with a physical asana practice. The practice of yoga opens many doors. And if it’s time to go deeper, the tools to help you do the work are right there inside of us.

ハタヨガでは正反対の要素を結びつけ、私たちの内なる男性性と女性性を融合させてゆきます。この一体化は微細な組織の中で起こり、それは私たちの身体構造と身体活動によって支えられています。ハタヨガ(アシュタンガ、アイアンガー、アヌサラ、ビクラム等)を練習している人は微細なエネルギーを培うことによって練習を深めてゆくことができるでしょう。経路を開いてクリアにし、バンダを使ってエネルギーが自由にチャクラを通って行けるよう導き、最終的には心の動きを静めて行きます。

このワークショップでは、私たちの微細な組織により意識を向けてゆくためのエクササイズを探求して行きます。バンダを強化するプラナヤマとチャクラをクリアにして活力を与える力強いマントラを学びます。そして最後に、微細な意識と身体を使ったアサナの練習とを結びつけるヨガセットと行います。ヨガの練習は様々な扉を開いてくれることでしょう。そしてもし、今さらに練習を深めようと思うなら、その助けとなる手段は私たちの内にあるのです。
